Reading is one of the most important skills that students need to achieve in order to succeed in school and in life. Yet, students today are failing to read at an alarming rate. Students today learn differently than students of yesterday, so we need to approach teaching them in a different, unique way.
For starters, most of the kids who struggle to read are right brain dominant. This means they learn best through color, picture, and movement. These are non-traditional learners who need a new, different approach to being taught reading skills.
Place a plastic report cover over the reading material that the student is to be reading. Give the student a marker and have him/her move the marker across the words he/she is reading as he/she reads aloud. This will help eye movement, keep the right hemisphere of the brain busy, and help the student sound out as he/she goes.
